KABUL (Pajhwok): At least nine million people have been infected with the coronavirus worldwide, data from the US-based John Hopkins University suggested on Monday.
After emerging in the Wuhan city of China last December, the COVID-19 virus has spread to at least 210 countries and territories across the globe.
In the first months, mostly Chinese people were infected and killed by the disease, which has now been controlled by Beijing. But the virus is spreading rapidly in Europe and America.
According to data from John Hopkins University, 9 million people have been diagnosed with the coronavirus globally as of Monday.
So far 480,000 people have died from Covid-19, most of them in Europe and the United States.
At least 470,000 have recovered from the pandemic worldwide. The United States has suffered the most casualties, with more than 235,500 infected and 122,000 dying.
Russia and Brazil have also been hit hard by the coronavirus. As many as 1 million people have been infected in Brazil and more than 58,000 in Russia.
At least 50,000 people have died in Brazil and more than 8,000 in Russia due to the coronavirus pandemic.
India, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Germany, Iran and Turkey are among the countries most affected by the outbreak of the coronavirus.
In Afghanistan, the virus is spreading rapidly. So far, more than 28,000 people have been infected, 580 have died and about 8,000 have recovered.
