Case against PTM leaders may be withdrawn

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): A case filed against Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) leaders and workers after an attack on a military checkpoint in North Waziristan may be withdrawn.

The Kharkamar military check-post in Dattakhel sub-division came under attack on May 26, 2019. Thirteen people were killed and several others injured in the clash.

Later on, a report was registered at the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Police Station in Bannu district against several PTM workers for attacking the military check-post.

On Saturday, a Pakistani newspaper reported that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government wanted to take back the case against the PTM leaders and activists.

Lawmaker Mohsin Dawar and Ali Wazir were nominated in the case along with others under different sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

But an application, filed in a Bannu anti-terrorism court, says the KP government wanted to withdraw the case, which was being heard in Abbottabad for security reasons.

According to Dawn, the application was filed on behalf of the state through Bannu district public prosecutor and ATC’s senior public prosecutor.

“As per instructions of the provincial government […], we intend to withdraw prosecution of the subject case,” the application reads.

Abdul Latif Afridi, a senior lawyer and legal representative of Dawar and Wazir, confirmed the move but said his clients were yet to receive a copy of the application.
