KABUL (Pajhwok): The High Council on Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption has ordered a probe into graft allegations against senior government officials.

The officials, if found guilty, must be punished in line with the law, the council stressed, while tasking the special anti-corruption secretariat with investigating the allegations.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said the orders for probing the charges came at a video conference chaired by President Ashraf Ghani.

The conference discussed a report on the implementation of the national strategy for combatting corruption, the statement added.

A report from the Women activists and human rights defenders was also discussed by the participants.

Dr. Fazal Mahmood Fazil, head of the Administrative Affairs Office, briefed the participants on overall progress in the implementation of counter-corruption standards.

He called the implementation of 98 percent of the standards in the national strategy for combatting corruption a huge achievement. He said key points of the strategy were considered for presentation at the Geneva Conference.

The special anti-corruption secretariat head provided the participants relevant information regarding the implementation of the strategy for eradicating graft.

The president referred to asset declarations by high-ranking government officials and members of parliament. He directed the officials and MPs to declare their assets as soon as possible.
