KABUL (Pajhwok) Free media advocacy group NAI on Thursday said the existing media law did not need amendment in the current circumstances.

In a statement, NAI welcomed the suspension of the amendment to the media law, describing the current media law as good.

NAI said a technical group had been set up to look into the issue after the government sent a draft law amending the media law to the National Assembly, a move opposed by the media community.

It said the technical group in its second session voted to stop the current process of amending the media law.

“The current media law is a good law and there is no serious need to amend it at the moment; But in order to have a more dynamic law, it is necessary to think more carefully.”

In an open letter to President Ashraf Ghani, a number of media outlets and institutions supporting journalists called the plan to amend the mass media law as “worrying” and called for a halt to its implementation.

The group said there were some serious issues in the government’s proposal that would limit media activities.

Therefore, a number of media outlets and institutions supporting journalists decided to arrange an open letter and send it to the president to stop the amendment.
