KABUL in near future.
Mohammad Afzal Shahmel, a lawmaker from Takhar province, told today’s session that fighting was underway between security forces and Taliban militants in several areas of Takhar province since past few days.
He said, “If attention is not paid by security forces, Takhar is likely to collapse into the hands Taliban militants.”
He said of 15 districts only centers of them were in government control.
He did not provide further information in this regard but said Takhar university had become a safe haven for militants in the provincial capital.
Mohammad Azim, another lawmaker from Sar-i-Pul province said: “Unfortunately insecurity has increased in north and in northeastern sides of the province and most of the province’s areas are with the Taliban.”
He said, “Two days back, I was in Jawzjan and wanted to go Sar-i-Pul but a clash was underway on the highway where more than 30 security forces suffered causalities, so he was not allowed to visit Sar-i-Pul.”
He urged the government to take measures for security of the northern zone, otherwise it would soon fall into Taliban hands.
A number of other senators held similar view and called on the government to pay attention to the security of the northern provinces.
Senate chairman Fazl Hadi Muslimyar also expressed his deep concern over the bad security situation in the country and called on security forces to hear and address people issues.
He also tasked the Meshrano Jirga defense commission to summon the security bosses to provide information to lawmakers in this regard.
