KABUL (Pajhwok): Of more than 21 million people infected with Covid-19 worldwide, five percent have lost their lives, statistics from a US-based university suggest.

After emerging in the Wuhan city of China last December, the coronavirus pandemic has spread to at least 210 countries around the globe, causing millions of infections and deaths.

In the first months, mostly Chinese citizens were infected and killed by the disease, which has now been controlled by China. But it is spreading rapidly in Europe and America.

According to data from the Johns Hopkins University, over 21 million people have contracted the Covid-19 virus internationally.

So far 763,000 individuals have died from the novel coronavirus globally, about five percent of the patients. Most of the fatalities have occurred in Europe and the United States.

Nearly 14 million people have recovered from the disease worldwide. The US has suffered the most casualties, with five million infections and 171,000 fatalities.

In Afghanistan also, the virus is spreading fast, with more than 37,000 people infected and 1,370 killed. More than 27,000 individuals have recovered from the disease so far.
