Nangarhar women want early start of intra-Afghan talks

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Women to enter intra-Afghan talks at the earliest possible to reach lasting peace.

Holding a gathering here, the women demanded ceasefire from the government and Taliban besides reduction in violence.

After the Loya Jirga authorized the government to release the 400 Taliban prisoners, the women said they now saw no hurdle to the earliest beginning of intra-Afghan talks.

Wrashmin Stanikzai, a member of the women union, said wanted the Taliban and government to implement the Consultative Loya Jirga decisions.

Torpakai Haqyar, another participant of the gathering, called on both sides to pave the way for ceasefire ahead of peace talks.

Shabana Barakzai, said the Afghans wound not accept talks during which bloodshed was underway.

Wrashmin Barakzai said the government’s peace negotiating team had 21 members and women should be given 30 percent participation in the team.

The women also called on the High National Reconciliation Council to make a procedure for peace that was acceptable to all.

The intra-Afghan talks were expected to begin on August 16 but were delayed indefinitely due to some issues.
