The Upper House held its first session after summer recess and condemned some of the government efforts that may hamper peace talks.
Ceasefire should be top priority
Mohammad Rahim Hussainyar, a lawmaker from Ghazni province, said: “Both sides should aligned views to end the 40 years of war and ceasefire should be the top priority during talks.”
Abdullah Qurleq, Mesharano Jirga secretary, while referring to the release of prisoners said: “What the Taliban wanted has happened now public representative want ceasefire. Both sides should respect public demand and enter ceasefire.”
He said the Taliban instead of softening their stance have increased violence.
Senate Chairman Fazal Hadi Musliyar stressed over the prompt launch of intra-Afghan talks and added that there should be ceasefire before the start of intra-Afghan talks.
Referring to the Consultative Peace Jirga, he said: “The nation has shared its views and now our demand from government, the Taliban and US was that to respect public mandate.”
Opportunity should not be lost
Lawmaker Ghairat Baheer said that peace was the demand of every Afghan and the available opportunity should be properly administered so that an inclusive peace is established nation-wide.
Kamel Baig Hussaini, another lawmaker, said: “I have a suggestion to the president and to the head of High National Reconciliation Council that not to waste time and not to lose the available opportunity of peace. Liberate people from the ongoing oppression.”
Government unable to administer peace process
Mohammad Nader Baloch, a lawmaker from Nimroz province, said: “The way government handle peace process is not acceptable to us. Government has no ability to administer peace process and its officials are busy in their personal affairs.”
He alleged the government was taking steps related to peace process under press from the US and international community.
Zalmai Zabuli, a lawmaker from Zabul province, said the government has no specific plan for peace. He demanded the HNRC Head Dr. Abdullah should be summoned to the house and briefed the lawmaker on progress made in peace process.
Lawmaker Fazal Hadi Muslimyar said people who had been in armed conflict with the government would have membership of this house by next year.
He vowed the Upper House would not keep silent against elements who create hurdle in the way of peace process.
He demanded the peace talks should be inclusive and all stakeholders, including minorities, should take part in the process.
