Kabul imams’ assassination mastermind arrested: NDS

KABUL (Pajhwok): The mastermind behind the assassination of two prominent religious scholars in Kabul has been arrested, announced the spy service on Thursday.

The National Directorate of Security (NDS) in a statement identified the detainee as Obaidullah aka Akrama, who was arrested on Thursday during a raid in Kabul.

The detainee was the mastermind of the assassination of Mualvi Ayaz Niazi, the imam and Mualvi Azizullah Mofleh, the imam of Sher Shah Suri mosque.

The statement said Obaidullah was one of the planners of the bomb attacks on Dr. Niazi and Mufleh in Kabul.

It claimed Obaidullah was also in-charge of fighting ISIS affiliates in the northern and northeastern provinces of the country.

The statement said Obaidullah had confessed to his involvement in several terrorist attacks in Kabul and other major cities during initial interrogation.

Before his arrest, Obaidullah was planning a suicide attack on Sadigh Mosque in northern Kunduz provimce, which was thwarted by his arrest.
