KABUL.

The Washington Times reported on Tuesday that Pompeo made the claim during a virtual event hosted by a Washington-based think tank.

While addressing the Atlantic Council event, Pompeo made the comments three days after the Afghan government and the Taliban launched direct peace talks in Doha.

In their February 29 peace pact, the Taliban assured the US they would no longer shelter any foreign terrorist outfits, including Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.

Under the deal, the Taliban have embarked on direct peace talks with Kabul in exchange America’s pledge to withdraw thousands of American troops from Afghanistan.

Pompeo also voiced his willingness to be a part of President Donald Trump’s second administration if he were to be re-elected on Nov. 3.

According to Reuters, the secretary of state said: “There’s still a lot of work to do and I’d love to find a way to be a part of that.”
