NELLI (Pajhwok): Farmers in central Daikundi province have harvested 25 metric tonnes of almond but decline in its price and sale made them worried, an official said on Friday.

Agriculture Department Head Abdul Wahid Ferozi said Daikundi produced different type of almonds but Star Baee, Gafmal, Kaghazi and Sangaki were the best and high quality almonds.

But farmers are worried about the declining price and sale of almonds.

Khadem Hussain, one of the farmers, complained against the lack of market for their product.

“We have no other source of income apart from the sale of almonds. We are worried what to do from one side winter is on the eve and from the other side our almonds have not been sold,” he said.

Mohammad, another farmer, from the Mirapur district also complained against the lack of market for almond.

He said: “Most of the farmers are not sound economically and almond sale is their only source of income.”

Mohammad Hassan, a businessman and shopkeeper in Nelli said: “Almonds are very inexpensive this year due to coronavirus. We did not have export this year and that created worries among farmers.”

He acknowledged that the prices of almond declined by 50 percent due to coronavirus.
