KABUL Journalists Support Centre (WJSC) during a debate on Wednesday asked media outlets to use peaceful terminology instead of war mongering terms.

WJSC Head Farida Naikzad said there is need to use terms that promote peace and stability instead of terminology and wording that reflect violence and war.

She said the use of peaceful terminology would help generate positive mindset about peace.

Naikzad said workshops regarding reporting on peace could not be conducted in all provinces due to lack of funds and demanded continuation of such workshops that promote peace and discourage violence. She said instead of word terrorist another substitute word should be used.

Mohammad Fahim Dashti, head of the Afghanistan Journalists Union, said that media outlets should use words that help reduce violence and stress that media should fulfill their responsibility regarding the establishment of peace in the country.

He said that the AJNU and WJSC had prepared a pattern of reporting that supported peaceful words and provided its training to journalists in 20 provinces.

He said the promotion of peace was the responsibility of media besides disseminating information on current affairs.

Asadullah Saadati, deputy head of the National Reconciliation Council, said: “The media can play a vital role in bringing peace through transparency in news coverage, critique of events, reflection of people’s demands for peace, and disseminating of the views of peace activists.”

He said in case Afghans failed to reach a peace agreement, international assistance to Afghanistan would be reduced which he termed a huge danger for the future of Afghanistan.

He also noted that the media should play an active role in providing accurate information on the peace talks.
