JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Hundreds of residents, including religious scholars, of eastern Nangarhar province on Sunday called on the Taliban to declare ceasefire and condemned recent attacks and bomb blasts.
Holding a gathering here, they said if the Taliban were really committed to peace, Afghanistan and Islam, they should end the ongoing conflict and declare truce for lasting peace.
They also accused the Taliban of fighting for their personal interest that caused the killing of dozens of innocent Afghans across the country.
The residents and scholars strongly condemned latest attacks and explosions in Ghanikhel district of Nangarhar and in neighboring Laghman province, in which a number of civilians suffered casualties.
The gathering at the Sherzai stadium was organized by a civil society group and a number of people from Kunar province were also present.
Suliaman Khpalwak, a member of the civil society group, told the gathering that a large number of civilians were killed and wounded in the Laghman and Ghanikhel attacks.
Religious scholars at the gathering called on Taliban militants to accept the Afghan government’s peace offer in the light of Qur’an and Sunah.
Maulvi Zia-ur-RahmanYar, a religious scholar, said the two sides should announce truce to pave the ground for lasting peace in the country.
Mohammad Amin Sadaqat, a tribal elder, said the Afghans wanted a peace in which the rights and dignity of all citizens were protected.
Other participants expressed similar views and urged the warring parties to announce truce for lasting peace and stability in the country.
