KABUL (Pajhwok): An Afghan National Army (ANA) base came under car bombing in the capital of central Maidan Wardak province on Thursday, a public representative said.
Provincial council member Sharifullah Hotak told Pajhwok Afghan News the predawn attack on the ANA base in Shaheddan area took place at around 4am.
“I have contacted area residents who say the car bomb was very powerful, smashing windowpanes and doors of several homes and mosques,” he said.
Hotak claimed residents had suffered heavy financial losses as a result of the explosion. Information regarding casualties was not immediately available, with the Maidan Shahar-Jalrez closed.
There was heavy fighting in the provincial capital all night long, said an inhabitant of the Charaki area. Attiqullah Rahmatzai added the clashes lasted until morning.
“A big explosion was heard in Kota Ashra area at about 2:30am, shattering all windowpanes in our home.
“Later on, the area was bombed by warplanes,” he added. At least five Taliban militants were killed in the air raid, the resident claimed.
Approached for comments, the governor’s spokesman said details of the attacks would be released later on. The Taliban have not yet commented on the fighting in Maidan Shahar.
