MAIMANA (Pajhwok): A prominent religious scholar died of his wounds in hospital after being shot injured by unknown attackers in this capital city of northern Faryab province on Friday.
Maulvi in Maimana city for morning prayers when he came under attack in the limits of the sixth police district, police said.
Maimana first district police official Mohammad Zahir Rahmani said Maulvi Rahmatullah was injured in the attack and later succumbed to his wounds in hospital.
He said no one had so far been arrested in connection with the murder.
Culture advisor at the Governor’s House, Wahidullah Mubarez, who is also neighbor of the victim, said Maulvi Rahmatullah had received three bullets. He was rushed to hospital where he died.
A source, who declined to be named, said Maulvi Rahmatullah was a prominent scholar of the Hanfi school of thought and had been critical of Wahabi and Salafi school of thought.
Maulvi Rahmatullah had been previously injured in a gun attack.
