Interim government only solution: Hekmatyar

KABUL (HIA) supreme leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar on Sunday said an interim government was the only political solution in Afghanistan, but the government in response said the HIA head in the past 40 years had no message for the Afghans except opposing authoritarian regimes.

Addressing a press conference in Kabul, Hekmatyar provided briefing on his recent trip to Pakistan and said peace would be established in the country and he would do it.

Referring to growing incidents of insecurity, Hekmatyar said security and safety of people was government’s responsibility and if the government had failed in this mission, it should empower people to do so.

During his visit Pakistan, Hekmatyar had said: “The US is defeated in Afghanistan and it has no other option but to leave.”

The HIA supremo also criticized the ongoing talks in Doha, saying: “Current talks in Doha are between Taliban and a team from Presidential Palace, not an intra-Afghan team. A large number of political parties are not part of the ongoing talks. There is need for political consensus and a single representation on the behalf of the people of Afghanistan.”

Presidential Spokesperson Sediq Sediqi in response to Hekmatyar’s remarks said: “There is freedom of expression in the country and our government is committed to political freedom. People are unmoved by his remarks.”

Presidential Advisor Shah Hussain Murtazavi said “Hekmatyar brings a formula of interim government with himself from Pakistan.”
