Coronavirus cases top 44 million worldwide

KABUL (Pajhwok): The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has surpassed 44 million globally, with over 1.1 million fatalities and more than 29 million recoveries, according to the latest tally from Johns Hopkins University.

The Chinese mainland on Tuesday reported 38 new asymptomatic cases, 20 new confirmed cases from overseas and 22 domestic cases (all in northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region) in the past 24 hours.

The Kashgar Prefecture in Xinjiang has completed COVID-19 testing for all 4.74 million residents as of Tuesday afternoon, according to local health authorities. A total of 183 people in the region have tested positive.

The U.S. has registered over 226,000 deaths and more than 8.7 million infections – both the highest in the world.

Australia's state of Victoria announced easing of restrictions after being placed under lockdown in early July.
