KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Saturday said he strongly supported the ‘Kabul Security Team’ which he said should be empowered to bring about considerable improvement in the central capital’s security situation.

About a month back, Ghani gave charge of Kabul security to his first vice-president Amrullah Saleh following increase in crimes in the city and since Saleh has been holding regular meetings with security officials every morning.

A statement from the Presidential Palace received by Pajhwok Afghan News said that Ghani attended the 27th meeting of Kabul Security Team chaired by Saleh in the VP’s office today morning on 6:30am.

Saleh termed coordination among security organs to control crimes as effective and said besides improving cohesion, the meeting would determine priorities of police and other relevant organs for ensuring security and safety for all citizens.

About the Security Charter program, the VP said the plan was effective due to public cooperation regarding chasing criminals and terrorists. Investigating usurped lands and illegal townships by security organs was also underway, he added.

President Ghani, talking to the meeting, said that good performance should be praised and there should be also standards for it. He said failures regarding security issues should not be repeated and Kabul people should see implementation of laws.

“I strongly support you. Your performance with regard to law enforcement is accepted by the Presidential Palace, the National Security Council and the Cabinet. A legitimate and strong government can build public trust,” he said.

He said coordination among security organs has improved and recent changes in the security situation helped restore people’s trust in the government.

“Kabul Security Team should understand Kabul’s value, this city is home to all Afghans and a symbol of national unity,” he said.

Ghani said Kabul people deserved a safe life and recovering grabbed lands could help the country’s capital become a source of income.

“Your team should be supported until Kabul is turned into a secure city. I will not hesitate from putting at your disposal any resources. Ulema should also take part in this program and utmost advantage should be taken from the winter season,” Ghani said.

Ghani said his demand from the Kabul security team was not to fear enforcement of law, use government’s soft power and law violators should not escape the law.
