KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Public Health on Thursday announced detecting 253 new Covid-19 cases during the last 24 hours, pushing active total to 44,177.

In a statement, the ministry said 1,201 people underwent tests during the period, with 253 people testing positive for the infection.

Of the fresh cases, 78 were recorded in Kabul, 71 in Herat, 34 in Ghazni, 23 in Nangarhar, 11 each in Balkh, Badakhshan, Kunduz, Badghis and Zabul, six Farah, five in Kandahar, and two in Ghor.

The ministry said 44 people recovered from the disease during the past 24 hours, taking the recoveries to 35,339.

At least five people died from the virus and thus the deaths reached 1,650 during the period.

MoPH officials also noted surge in positive Covid-19 cases this week compared to the previous weeks.

The Ministry of Public Health on Wednesday announced to close wedding halls to prevent the second wave of Covid-19, by the end of December.
