FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Taliban insurgents captured the Maimay district of northeastern Badakhshan province after an hours-long clash with security forces, the town’s administrative head said on Thursday.

Kambir Qurbani told Pajhwok Afghan News the Taliban militants coordinately stormed the district from several directions and after a few hours firefight, they captured the district.

According to him, due to lack of enough security forces and reinforcements, the district fell into the hands of militants.

Ahmad Javid Mujadidi, a member of the provincial council, told Pajhwok the district police chief and intelligence head were also killed in the clash during the fall of the district.

The Taliban have not yet commented in this regard.
