KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ashraf Ghani administration has apparently ramped up efforts to constitute the High Council for National Reconciliation (HCNR).
The government has moved to fast-track the council’s formation following a spate of calls from international allies and national stakeholders.
On Sunday, President Ashraf Ghani met his predecessor Hamid Karzai; HCNR Chairman Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and renowned jihadi leader Abdul Rasul Sayyaf on the issue.
A statement from the Presidential Palace said they exchanged views on the peace process in Afghanistan and the structure of the reconciliation panel.
The participants also conferred on the maiden meeting of the council. Earlier, the panel went into a meeting to finalise its key members.
Several months back, Ghani had named members of the council headed by Abdullah. However, Abdullah spurned the appointments.
Earlier in the week, the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States called for the early formation of the HCNR.
