PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan has reaffirmed its steadfast support for the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process, backing a political solution to the conflict in Afghanistan.

Prime Minister Imran Khan and President Ashraf Ghani, in a phone call on Wednesday, discussed progress in the ongoing Afghan peace process and strengthening of bilateral; relations.

Khan phoned Ghani as a delegation from Doha-based Taliban’s Political Commission (TPC) met Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi in Islamabad. The visiting delegation is scheduled to meet the prime minister.

The Foreign Office said the three-day visit is taking place on Pakistan’s invitation as part of Islamabad’s efforts for outreach to all Afghan stakeholders for a peaceful settlement of the war in the neighbouring country.

Hailing the recent headway in the intra-Afghan negotiations in Doha, the premier said Islamabad’s outreach to Afghan stakeholders was in line with its facilitative efforts to ensure progress towards an inclusive and broad-based political settlement.

He renewed Pakistan’s call for all Afghan sides to initiate measures for reduction in violence leading to a comprehensive ceasefire in the neighbouring country.

The two sides agreed to continue their engagement for supporting the peace process and enhancing bilateral cooperation.
