KABUL (Pajhwok): International organization the Election Support Group (ESG) on Thursday strongly condemned yesterday’s killing of Mohamed Yousuf Rashid, Executive Director of Free and Fair Election Forum of Afghanistan (FEFA).
Rashid was travelling in Chihilsitoon area of Kabul on Wednesday morning when unknown gunmen opened fire at his vehicle, killing him and injuring his driver.
“Rashid has been a long-standing advocate for the rights of all Afghans to elect their representatives and determine their country’s future. His lifelong dedication and his contribution to strengthening Afghanistan’s electoral process is both enduring as well as widely recognized within Afghanistan and internationally, the ESG said in a statement
The organization said the heinous attack demonstrated significant challenges that the Afghans continued to face on a daily basis.
The ESG, on behalf of its countries and organizations, called for an end to such violence and its condemnation by all those who cared for Afghanistan.
It said the international community remained committed to supporting the electoral process and institutions, and other stakeholders, including observer groups, in their efforts to build a democratic, stable, prosperous and peaceful country.
The ESG also extended its deepest sympathy and condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Rashid and called on the government to swiftly investigate the incident and hold the perpetrators accountable in line with the law.
