KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 234 new positive COVID-19 cases and nine deaths from the infection have been recorded across the country in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Public Health said on Thursday.

The ministry said 2,568 people underwent tests during the past 24 hours and the virus was detected in 234 people, pushing the overall tally to 51,594.

Of the fresh cases, 39 were recorded in Kabul, 32 in Herat, 27 in Kandahar, 22 in Kapisa, 19 in Nimroz, 16 in Nangarhar, 12 in Takhar, 11in Baghlan, 10 in Parwan, six each in Bamiyan, Daikundi and Jawzjan, four each in Balkh and Kunar, 3 each in Badakhshan and Sar-e-Pul, 2 each in Logar, Badghis, MaidanWardak, Urozgan, Faryab and Samangan and one each in Ghazni and Zabul provinces.

At least 662 individuals recovered from the pandemic during the past 24 hours, taking the recoveries to 40,582.

The ministry said nine people lost their lives to the virus during the period and the total deaths reached 2,135.

The ministry has announced that the second wave of the pandemic has begun in the country and people should follow the virus preventive guidelines.
