SHEBRGHAN (Pajhwok): Filmmakers and cinematographers on Thursday complained about lack of a cinema building and other facilities in northern Jawzjan province.

Abdul Matin Sadid, a cinematographer in Jawzjan, told Pajhwok Afghan News that they showcased 10 short films in today’s event while marking the International Cinema Day.

“There was a big cinema hall in Shiberghan, capital of Jawzjan, but it was destroyed during the Taliban regime and now people lack this entertainment place,” he said.

He said filmmakers in the province had no resources to make feature films and the films played today were mostly prepared with primary and mobile phone cameras.

Sadid asked officials concerned to provide facilities to filmmakers and artists so they would be able to have cinematic productions.

Fareshta Noorani, another cinematographer, told Pajhwok that the aim of cinema was to spread positive messages and showcase today’s civilization to the Afghan society.

“I have been working in cinema since last five years, but I and my friends are faced with lack of resources, if we have access to facilities, we can provide great artistic productions to people,” she said.

Azimullah Rahmayar, Jawzjan information and culture director, said that besides marking International Cinema Day, they also discussed challenges facing the film industry.

He said despite shortcomings, the information and culture department in collaboration with other organs had worked for improvement of the film sector.

“A small cinema building left from Russian workers in Shiberghan is a suitable place to be used for cinema, but it requires some repairs and approval of relevant organs”, he said.

Dozens of culturists and filmmakers participated in today’s program organized in the Technical and Professional Institute’s hall.
