TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): The Gizab district of central Uruzgan province has been cleared of Taliban insurgents after a 10-day military operation, the governor said on Friday.
Governor Mohammad Omar Sherzad said the military operation against the Taliban in Gizab had started 10 days ago and was wrapped up successfully today.
He added all areas of Gizab district, which remained under the control of the group for several months, had been recaptured.
The governor said 55 Taliban insurgents were killed and wounded and a key commander was among 33 rebels killed in the joint operation.
On the other hand, the displaced families from the district to Tirinkot, the provincial capital, want the government to allow them to return to the district.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi told Pajhwok Afghan News the Gizab district was still under their control and the government had made no progress.
