JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Hundreds of local army soldiers, trained by the Afghan Army’s Selab Corps in the east, have been deployed to protect the airport in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, and perform security duty in Kot, Achin and Durbaba districts.
The soldiers numbering 435 graduated on Sunday after eight weeks of training by Afghan trainers, officials said.
At the graduation ceremony, 201 Selbab Corps commander Brigadier General Abdul Jabbar Wafa said that the local soldiers had been professionally trained and they would carry out their duties in selected areas with the help of people and would have full support of the Afghan National Army.
Babrak Miakhel, deputy governor of Nangarhar, said the graduates had previously served as Afghan Local Police officers in districts and they would soon be deployed to their native towns after the training.
Syed Rahman Momand, the head of People’s Support Program in the east, also welcomed the deployment and assured that people of the region would fully cooperate with the soldiers.
Tasnim Yar Momand, a graduate, expressed satisfaction with the training he received and hoped other young men would also join the security forces to serve the country.
It is worth mentioning that local army forces have been deployed in many districts of Nangarhar.
