KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 20 children have died of pneumonia, resulting from harsh cold weather, in northern Balkh province.
A private TV channel reported on Monday a marked spoke in pneumonia cases among children this winter.
Provincial health officials told Ariana News that 326 children were hospitalised with pneumonia across Balkh in December.
In all, 1,679 children were taken to hospital, with 326 suffering from pneumonia; indicating a 20 percent increase, said Nawroz Seberi, head of the Children’s Department at the Balkh Public Health Department.
In late December, Save the Children warned over 300,000 Afghan children faced freezing winter conditions that could lead to illness and death in the absence of proper winter clothing and heating.
