KABUL (Pajhwok): The Afghanistan Meteorology Department (AMD) on Tuesday said the country would probably face drought in 2021 following a 35 percent decline in rainfalls in 2020 and low rain forecasts for current winter.
Mohammad Nasim Murad, in charge of weather forecasts at AMD, told Pajhwok Afghan News that their data and researches by south Asian countries showed Afghanistan received great rainfalls in 2019 but least in 2020.
A research conducted by AMD in collaboration with neighboring countries shows that rainfalls reduced by 35 percent in 2020, compared to 2019, he said.
He added that there was a probability of drought in Afghanistan as reduced rainfall was anticipated for the first three months of 2021 in the country, compared to past years.
Akbar Rustami, spokesman of the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL), said that reduced rains affected agricultural products and livestock as it damaged pastures and rain-fed wheat crops.
He said the ministry would start distribution of livestock feed in provinces if the drought became real.
