KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghan National Army (ANA) commandos have freed 27 individuals from a Taliban-controlled prison in southern Helmand province.
In a statement, the Ministry of Defence said the ANA commandos raided the Taliban jail in the Nahr-i-Saraj district of the province on Wednesday night.
At least 27 captives, including 26 civilians, were freed from the prison. “The Taliban have severely tortured the captives and treated them inhumanly.”
One guard of the prison was killed and a number of weapons and ammunition were seized by the security forces, the ministry added.
But Fazal Bari Fayyaz, the district’s administrative chief, said he was unaware about the commando raid. The Taliban have not yet commented on the overnight operation.
