JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The provincial council chairman of eastern Nangarhar on Sunday claimed Pakistan had secretly invited some Afghan tribal elders from border districts and made promises to them, calling it intervention in Afghanistan.
Ahmad Ali Hazrat told Pajhwok Afghan News that the Afghan government and people should not remain silent in the face of Pakistan’s moves because it would have bad consequences in future.
“I have correct information that these tribal elders have been promised scholarships, permanent Pakistani identity, cash and some other things,” he added.
He said Pakistan’s aim was to show its sovereignty in tribal areas and if there was a referendum on the tribal belt, the people of Afghanistan’s tribal areas would have a positive view of Pakistan.
He said such covert Pakistani efforts on the Afghan side were a direct interference in Afghanistan’s affairs and urged the Afghan government to take action against in this regard.
Meanwhile, Wajah-ur-Rehman Shinwari, director of tribal affairs in Nangarhar, denied that some leaders had gone to Pakistan and that Pakistan had made promises to them.
However, he said in the past, Pakistan had repeatedly made offers to tribal elders in various districts, which they had rejected.
He said Pakistan had promised to provide Pakistani identity cards to tribal elders in various border districts and provide them with roads, electricity and other facilities in their areas, but the tribal elders did not agree.
