KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Some residents of southern Kandahar province on Monday held a gathering to voice their support for democracy and aversion to the establishment of an interim government.

The gathering was attended by tens of Kandahar, tribal elders, religious scholars and civil society activists. They said once they had the unpleasant experience of interim government and were no more interested in such setup.

Rahmatullah Agha, a resident of Miansheen district, said an interim government was being talked about these days, but it was against all national values.

“Every individual or group talking about interim government is actually talking against the aspiration of people because people want democracy to continue, they don’t want any catastrophe under the interim government.”

“Many elders are sitting in this gathering, all remember that 30 years ago people talked about interim government, the fact that what later happened everyone knows, the country was destroyed and people dispersed.”

Syed WaliSrak, a civil society activist, said people will not allow anyone to act against the constitution.

He also termed the wishes of some groups and individuals about interim government against the interest of the nation.

Azami, a youth representative, said people wanted peace in which national values were not compromised.

Azam Khan Samandar, a tribal elder said: “Peace is a huge blessing, but we should think that who has deprived us from this big blessing.”

He said those creating hurdles in the way of peace are the enemy of this nation and the soil.

This comes after the Taliban Qatar Office Delegation Member Abbas Stanikzai in Russia demanded President Ashraf Ghani to resign for the sake of peace and allow an Islamic government which will pave the way for ending the ongoing conflict and establish peace.
