KABUL (Pajhwok): Some Wolesi Jirga members on Monday demanded a halt to the distribution of new banknotes and said no banknote should be printed under the signature of the current acting Da Afghanistan Bank head.
Earlier, some lawmakers had claimed that DAB acting head Ajmal Ahmadi tried to registrar his signature in the new banknotes and for this purpose he had been planning to go to Poland where the new banknotes are going to be printed.
Pajhwok Afghan News on Sunday published a special report on this matter.
Some lawmakers today (Monday) debated the matter, with lawmaker Mohammad Naseem Mudabir saying Ahmadi’s presence as acting head of DAB was not acceptable to them.
He said if Ahmadi went out of the country for signing the new banknotes, it would be an illegal act, adding that new banknotes should not be printed until the new DAB head was introduced to the lower house for a trust vote.
Ziauddin Zia, a lawmaker from Samangan province, shared similar view and said Finance Ministry was headed by an acting minister and the printing of new banknotes should be stopped.
Abdul Aziz Hakimi, head of the Wolei Jirga National Economic Commission, said the printing of new banknotes should be stopped until the government introduced minister-designate for Finance Ministry and DAB head to the lower house for trust vote.
The Finance Ministry and DAB did not comment on the matter when contacted.
