KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Wednesday expressed his optimism about the new US administration’s stance on the Afghan peace process, saying they were moving towards a predictable peace process and key partnership.
A statement from the Presidential Palace said President Ghani met with EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, Crisis Management and Emergency Response Commission Janez Lenarčic.
According to the statement, President Ghani said that he was optimistic about the new US administration’s position on the peace process.
“The peace process in Doha is ongoing and we need to work with all parties involved, including the European Union, and in the near future the NATO Defense Ministers’ Conference will work on this issue comprehensively,” he said.
For his part, Janez Lenarčic said the EU appreciated and supported the Afghan government’s peace efforts.
However, he expressed concern over the escalation of violence in Afghanistan, adding: “The condition for peace talks must be a ceasefire.”
He added that the recent targeted killings were not attacks on individuals, but on values and the rule of law.
He said they desired an independent and sovereign Afghanistan.
