Eight killed, 10 wounded in Faryab incidents

MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Four security personnel, three civilians and one Taliban member have been killed during separate incidents of violence in northern Faryab province, sources said on Sunday.

Another eight security personnel and two Taliban militants were wounded during the incidents.

A resident of Maimana city, who wished anonymity, told Pajhwok Afghan News that a public protection forces soldier shot dead a 50-years-old man at around 9am Sunday morning in Afghankot village of the provincial capital.

He said a number of local residents protested in front of the Public Protection Forces’ battalion and demanded the arrest of the soldier.

Police spokesman Abdul KarimYoresh told Pajhwok Afghan News that Faryab governor Naqibullah Faryeq and police chief Ghaibullah Sadat visited the area after the incident and talked with the protesters and ordered the arrest of the soldier.

He added that the soldier was cleaning his weapon when a shot was accidentally fired and killed a pedestrian.

 

Clashes between security forces and Taliban

Yoresh said two soldiers of Special Unit of the Afghan National Army (ANA) and a woman were killed and a soldier of National Directorate of Security (NDS) was wounded in a Sunday morning clash between government security forces and Taliban in ShirinTagab district of Faryab.

He said the woman was killed in crossfire, but a local source, who wished anonymity,  said the woman, a resident of Koh-i-Sayad area, was killed in firing by government forces.

The source said one policeman was killed and seven others including police chief of Qaisar district, Saif-ur-Rahman, were lightly wounded in a clash with militants on Saturday.

Separately, Mohammad Asif, an ANA soldier and a Taliban insurgent were killed and two Taliban insurgents were wounded as a result of a clash between government forces and Taliban in Garziwan district of Faryab province.

 

A woman hangs herself in Faryab

The police spokesman said Totiya, a 34-years-old woman, hung herself to death in the kitchen of her house in Maimana city, the provincial capital.

Yoresh said what prompted the woman to take her life was not yet known; but police had started investigating the incident.
