China promises Afghanistan 400,000 doses of Covid vaccine

KABUL (Pajhwok): A Chinese diplomat has promised donating 400,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine to Afghanistan.

Chinese Ambassador in Kabul Wang Yu held out the promise during a meeting with Public Health Minister Wahid Majrooh here the on Sunday.

The ambassador tweeted: “The supply of Chinese vaccines to numerous countries fulfills President Xi Jinping’s commitment…”

Wang Yu wrote the vaccine — developed in compliance with international standards and relevant laws — had been approved for emergency use by more than 30 countries.

Earlier in the month, India has also donated 500,000 doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to Afghanistan and some other poor countries.

As many as 250,000 Afghans, mostly health workers, security personnel and media representatives are being inoculated in the first phase of the vaccination drive.
