KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): A team of the Attorney General Office (AGO) has arrived in southern Kandahar province from Kabul for evaluating the last five years’ performance of the province’s municipality.

Nawab Ahmadzai, anti-corruption chief at AGO is leading the team which has so far met with Kandahar governor and some other provincial officials during their visit.

Ahmadzai said that he traveled to Kandahar on the direction of the president in order to evaluate the five-year activities of Kandahar municipality.

He said that his team was comprised of representatives from AGO, National Directorate of Security (NDS), Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG), National Procurement Authority (NPA), Ministry of Urban Development and Land, Independent Administrative Reform and Civil Service Commission (IARCSC) and Ministry of Finance.

The team would evaluate Kandahar municipality activities with the help of Kandahar Ulema, youths, civil society activists and media representatives, Ahmadzai added.

Kandahar governor, Rohullah Khanzada, thanked the team for its evaluation of municipality’s activities and said that fighting corruption was a priority of the local administration.

After the conflict, corruption is another major factor that contributed to serious problems for the people, he said, adding that after his appointment, he started evaluation of all local organs for prevention of corruption.

He added that the result of their evaluations would be shared with the public over time. Khanzada asked the AGO team to neutrally evaluate activities of the municipality and asked mayor, Eng. Rafi Hayat to help the team in the process.

Kandahar residents welcomed evaluation of municipality activities by the AGO and say that it was the first time in years when a team from the central government is evaluating an organization’s activities in Kandahar.

Mukhtar Ahmad, a resident of 11th police district of Kandahar city, said that all government organizations should be evaluated.

People suffer from corruption, all of the local organs are somehow involved in graft, some of them extort people while others delay people’s works for weeks, he said.

He said that organs that collect high revenue such as customs, revenue office, municipality, transport department, public works and some others were more corrupt.

Corruption creates distance between the people and the government besides causing huge losses to the public, he added.
