Wolesi Jirga’s first deputy speaker elected

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Wolesi Jirga or lower house of the parliament on Sunday elected lawmaker Javid Jaihoon as first deputy speaker of the house while three remaining posts of the administration board of the house would go for election on Monday.

The 17th term of third legislative year of the parliament was inaugurated by the president on Saturday.

Article 87 of the constitution states:  “Each of the two houses of the National Assembly, at the commencement of their work period, shall elect one member as president … and two members as first and second deputies and two members as secretary and assistant secretary for a period of one year.

Eleven lawmakers had nominated for the first and second deputy speaker positions and secretary and deputy secretary positions of the lower house today.

Each of the nominees required to secure 114 votes to win the mentioned seats.

Three lawmakers, Javid Jaihoon, Munawar Shah Bahaduri and Ziauddin Zia, were candidates for the first deputy secretary of the house, but Jaihoon was able to receive 120 votes and win the seat.

Mirza Mohammad Katawazai, a lawmaker from Paktia province was the first deputy speaker of the lower house for the last three years.

The second deputy speaker and secretary and deputy secretary positions had no any winners in today’s election and the seats are expected to be contended again for election on Monday.

Mir Rahman Rahmani, Wolesi Jirga speaker said that the seats that had no any winners today would be introduced with new nominees.
