KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Education (MoE) has taken a U-turn on the ban it imposed last week on public singing by schoolgirls above 12 years of age.

On March 10, the ministry announced banning girls 12 years old and above from singing the national anthem or other group songs in mixed company.

However, the MoE decision drew instant opposition from social media users, the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission and other quarters.

In reaction to the restriction, in reaction to the ministry decision, the rights panel said the ban was violative of Afghan laws, child rights and the constitution.

In a statement on Saturday, MoE said a recent letter from the Kabul Education Department “does not reflect the stance of the Ministry of Education.”

The issue was still under review and the ministry would oppose the department’s suggestion, in case of need, the statement said.

It added the MoE leadership remained committed to supporting the right of all students, including girls, to participate in cultural, arts and sports events.
