Govt has active programs for supporting farmers: Ghani

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani, while celebrating National Farmer Day, on Monday said Afghanistan had embarked on active programs to support farmers in becoming self-sufficient

In a statement from the Presidential Palace, the president congratulated all farmers while addressing a program on the account of National Farmers Day today.

He said that the soil, water and climate of Afghanistan well suited farming and water management based on canals and dams was a priority of the government in the New Year.

“We will soon inaugurate completion of Kamal Khan Dam which would play a vital role in irrigation. Other agricultural infrastructures and dams in other provinces of the country are also under work,” Ghani said.

He added that the government had active programs to support farmers, find markets for their products both inside and outside of the country.

These programs helped farmers sell their products at a good price and time, he added.

He said that air corridors also helped a lot in exports of domestic products abroad in the last few years.

Afghanistan should become self-sustained in the agriculture area and there is no need for imports considering current capacities, he added.

Mechanizing the country’s agriculture, using modern day equipment for high productivity and prevention of water loss were important for agricultural development, he concluded.
