MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Security forces have arrested 35 Daesh (Islamic State) rebels who planned to carry out bombings and suicide attacks during Nawroz celebrations in northern Balkh province, an official said on Tuesday.

Governor Mohammad Farhad Azimi made the claim at a gathering at his office. Most of Daesh rebels were university students, he said.

He alleged the detainees wanted to carry out explosions and suicide attacks during Nawroz celebrations in the province.

Meanwhile, Azimi said they had prevented activities of irresponsible gunmen. Those trying to disturb security Balkh province had been identified, he added.

Mohammad Afzal Hadid, chairman of the provincial council, commended the security forces for preventing incidents of violence during Nawroz celebrations.

He hit out at the government for paying no attention to Nawroz functions this year. He asked the people to strength unity and steer the country out of the current crisis.

Police chief Syed Mirajuddin Sadat said they had been able to prevent disruptive activities in Mazar-i-Sharif with the cooperation of the people.
