KABUL (Pajhwok): The Afghan government on Thursday renewed its commitment to upholding human rights and claimed to have taken many steps to improve rights situation in the country.

This comes after a US State Department Annual report accuses the Afghan government of violating human rights in some areas.

Presidential Spokesperson Dawa Khan Menapal told Pajhwok Afghan News that President Ashraf Ghani had issued special directives during every meeting of the National Security Council regarding the protection of civilians and improving human rights.

He said the situation in prisons was monitored time to time and special attention was paid to civilian protection during military operations.

Menapal blamed Taliban for most of human rights violations, adding the group used common people and their homes as shield.

He asserted every individual violating human rights was dealt with in accordance with the law.

A US State Department annual report on human rights violations said that some countries, including Afghanistan, committed human rights violations last year.

According to the report, besides intra-Afghan talks in Doha, militant groups attacked Afghan security forces and common people which resulted in the killing of thousands of innocent people.

The killing of innocent people, unauthorized killing by security forces, severe torture and abuse of prisoners were highlighted as grave human rights violations in Afghanistan in the report.
