KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): At least 11 Taliban insurgents have been killed during an operation in the Arghandab district of southern Kandahar province, an official said on Saturday.
Operations were conducted in Joy Lahore and Tabeen areas of the district on Friday night.
Deputy police chief Ghorzang Afridi told Pajhwok Afghan the militants wanted to target security forces by detonating an explosives-packed tank.
He said the tank was positively recognised and blown up in an airstrike, which resulted in killing of 11 attackers.
Khwaja Yahya Alwi, commander of the 205th Atal Corps, said 18 militants were killed in air-and-ground operations.
He said with the destruction of the explosives-laden vehicle, the lives of many citizens had been saved.
The Taliban have not yet commented in this regard.
