PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The situation in Afghanistan is high on the agenda as top Pakistani and Russian diplomats meet in Islamabad today (Wednesday).

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who landed in Islamabad on Tuesday on a two-day official visit, is set to meet his Pakistani counterpart, Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

The visiting foreign minister will hold delegation-level talks with Qureshi today. The talks will focus on the expansion of bilateral cooperation and regional and international issues.

Cooperation on promoting the Afghan peace process, security and defence, as well as counter-terrorism would figure prominently at the meeting.

Lavrov will also meet Prime Minister Imran Khan, Chief of the Army Staff Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa and other senior Pakistani leaders.

“Today, Pakistan is an important foreign policy partner of our country. Fruitful interaction is maintained at international organisations, primarily at the UN and its specialised agencies,” the Foreign Ministry in Moscow said.

In a statement, the ministry said cooperation between Moscow and Islamabad was based on the similarity of positions on most of the problems, including issues of strategic stability and countering terrorism.
