KABUL (Pajhwok): Nai organization which supports open media in Afghanistan on Sunday said that the Afghan media was concerned about the fate of freedom of speech and press in the upcoming Turkey Summit on Afghan peace.
A conference between the Taliban and the Afghan government is scheduled in April in Istanbul to negotiate a peaceful solution to end the 40-year war in Afghanistan.
In a statement, Nai said that the organization as a pioneer in media advocacy was responsible to defend freedom of speech and press in the country’s political process.
The source said, Nai formally asks the US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Process, Zalmai Khalilzad, to value the principle of freedom of expression and the achievements of the Afghan media as a red line at the Turkey Summit and ask negotiating parties to respect the values.
The Afghan media community is concerned about the fate of freedom of speech and press in the coming conference and want these values protected, the source said.
According to Nai, freedom of speech and media were fundamental rights of Afghan people which observed in the constitution.
