MAIMANA (Pajwhok): Local officials on Thursday said 2.5 tons of narcotics seized from smugglers over the last four years in northwestern Faryab province were torched in Maimana city, the provincial capital.
Gen. Ghaibullah Sadat, Faryab police chief, said that the narcotics included heroin, crystal myth, opium, hashish and alcoholic drinks which seized in 210 cases between 2015 and 2019.
He warned drug smugglers and dealers to stop the illegal business or they would be fallen to the hands of Afghan security forces.
Mohammad Ghaws Ameri, head of the appellate court of Faryab, said that all those arrested in connection to the drug smuggling cases were in detention and none of them were released despite contacts and mediations from some figures.
He said that the current control measures for curbing drug business were not enough. Roads and under bridges are still areas of drug addicts which is a matter of concern, he added.
Zakarya Sangaryar, an investigative officer of the counternarcotic department of Faryab, who was present during the torching of narcotics, said that each of drug smugglers detained were sentenced from one to 30 years in jail.
He called the efforts of counternarcotic organs as effective and said that around five million people in the country were contaminated with the drug.
