KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Monday asked the Afghan security forces to observe truce during Eid-ul-Fitr holiday but strongly respond to any violations from militants.

A statement from the Presidential Palace received by Pajhwok Afghan News said that the government was aware of the Taliban’s ceasefire, but the Afghan public wanted a real and permanent truce.

Violence, killing civilians, destroying infrastructures and public facilities are forbidden beyond the holidays of Eid, the source said.

The statement said that there was no any excuse left with the Taliban to continue war after the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan and Islamic scholar’s opposition to the conflict.

“It is our message to the Taliban that attacks on people and public facilities, particularly in Logar, Helmand, Ghazni, Herat, Baghlan, Zabul and Kabul show that you will be more hated by people by waging violence against Afghans and creating an atmosphere of terror…” the source said.

The source asked the Taliban to accept the people’s demand of a permanent ceasefire and come to the negotiating table.

President Ghani ordered Afghan forces to observe the ceasefire during Eid and defend people in case of any violations.

On Sunday night, the Taliban also announced a three-day ceasefire during the holidays of Eid-ul-Fitr.
