KABUL (Pajhwok): A Helmand University professor pursuing higher education in India has died from Covid-19 infection,  the Ministry of Higher Education said on Tuesday.

MoHE in a statement said ShirAhmadSahand, professor at Helmand University who was pursuing master’s degree in Andra University of India was infected with Covid-19 and succumbed to the virus yesterday.

Dr. AbasBasir, Minister of Higher Education expressed his grief on the passing of the professor.

AjmalAlemzai, media in-charge of Afghan Embassy in New Delhi confirmed the professor’s death to Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said Prof. Sahand was in second year of his master’s degree and passed away on Monday due to Covid-19 complications.

Prof. Sahand’s classmate, BasirulHaqAdil wrote on his facebook page that they had been colleagues for three years.

He added Prof. Sahand was among the top four professors and employees of Arakozia University and also received many awards.

Adil said Prof. Sahand hoped for a master’s degree and finally got accepted to pursue masters in India but succumbed to the virus before receiving the degree.

It is worth mentioning that Covid-19 is speedily spreading in India. The country has been reporting 400,000 daily infections and 4,000 deaths.

So far around 23 million people have been infected with the virus  and 240,000 people have died in India.

According to the Afghan Embassy in India thousands of Afghan refugees have been infected with the virus in India and dozens have died.
