Violence against women has declined in Nangarhar: Fatana Aziz

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): violence against women has declibes in areas where they have access to law and justirce, says the Nangarhar women’s affairs director.

However, the official acknowledged women in militant-controlled areas and remote villages were still deprived of their rights.

Fatana Aziz, director of women affairs, said her department had recently launched public awareness programs at the district level so that the women could approach to law enforcement agenicies to assert their rights and protect themselves from violence.

She told Pajhwok Afghan News at least 27 cases had been registered against women so far during the current year, compared to 172 last year.

Violence against women was still ongong, but they were aware of their rights and moved courts against perpetrators, the director added.

Harassment, torture, elopement, beatings, rape, cheating, underage and forced marriage and death threats were some of the issues that Aziz highlighted..

She said public access to the law and increased awareness had allowed women to share their problems with the judiciary. As a result, the level of violence against women has dropped.

She added with the help of the Hajj and Religious Affairs Department and in coordination with religious, they had launched effort to control violence against women through mosque imams.

Meanwhile, religious scholars say that violence against women is forbidden in Islam and the Prophet (PBUH) treated his family well.

Maulvi Mohammad Ghani Faroqi, a religious scholar, told Pajhwok: “There is no justification for voiolence against any human being in Islam. Prophe Mohammad (PBUH) has also emphasised on kind treatment of  relatives

Analysts believe that gnorance and lack of access to information in Afghanistan have led to years of violence against women and children.
