KABUL (Pajhwok): A number of Wolesi Jirga members on Wednesday condemned Gen. Dostum’s supporters’ armed protest and said it was not in the interest of Afghanistan.

Armed protestors chanted slogans against the government in Maimana, the capital of Faryab province, after the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) approved the appointment of Dawod Laghmani as Faryab governor.

Gen. Dostum reacted to the move and told his supporters that he had not been consulted on the appointment of Faryab governor. He ordered his supporters to stand against Laghmani’s appointment, thus the protest has been ongoing over the past two weeks.

Nader Khan Katawazai, a lawmaker from Paktia, dubbed Gen. Dostum an illiterate person and warned this could force people to support the Taliban.

He said Dostum’s standing against the decision of the government came at a time when the government had awarded him the rank of Marshal, his daughter the membership of senate and his son membership of negotiating delegation.

He said protest was the right of every citizen but no one had the right to tote guns.

IbrarullahMurad, a lawmaker from Nangarhar province, condemned Dostum’s supporters and said: “When someone encourages people to stand against a system and its decision, then we don’t recognize them as well. Dostum and his supporters should stop such things otherwise they will be faced with strong reaction from the people.”

Gul Ahmad Noorzad, a lawmaker from Nimroz province, stressed over logical solution to the problem and added collision of two groups was not in the interest of the people of Afghanistan at this stage.

Speaker Mir RahmanRahmani termed the situation critical and said government and politicians should act to normalize situation in Faryab.

“Afghans should have learned from four decades of fighting, migration, poverty and unfortunate incidents. I call on government and people not confront people as a result of the discriminatory policies and actions,” he said.
